  • February 2020 - Ms. Hecht's favorite practice resource!

During the past few weeks, we took time during our lessons to start setting up our Essential Elements Interactive accounts. This digital companion to our strings method book is a wonderful resource for home practice. It's easy to use and it's free! My favorite feature is all the different styles of accompaniment available with each song.

If you still need to set up your account, you can find instructions here on the EEi page of my classroom website. Please let me know at school if you need assistance. Happy practicing!

  • January 2020 - Snow day & delay procedures

Happy new year everyone! This is the time of year that we all need to be aware of what happens if there is a snow day or delay at school!

    • If there is a snow day, school is cancelled and we miss that day of strings lessons. The following day will be the number day that it was scheduled to be.
    • If there is a delay, we will still have lessons that day! Ms. Hecht will rearrange the schedule when we get to school and let your teacher know. It's important to bring your instrument & music even if we have a delay!

  • October 2019 - Music and dance history!

This month, 5th grade orchestra students are beginning work on Jacques Offenbach's famous Can-Can in preparation for our winter concerts. The can-can is a dance style popularized in France in the 1840s, often associated with chorus line formation and high kicks. The painting below by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicts a French dance troupe in 1895.

The music we will be performing, from Offenbach's 1858 opera Orpheus in the Underworld, is perhaps the most recognizable music ever set to the can-can dance. We hope you enjoy listening to it in December!

Our 5th grade string players will be performing Henry Purcell's Rigadoon in their upcoming spring concerts. A rigadoon (also spelled "rigadon" or "rigaudon") is a traditional couples' dance from the Baroque period. Composer Henry Purcell lived from 1659 to 1695 and was one of England's most famous musicians. Come to our spring concerts in May and June to hear this beautiful music!

If there is a delay on your day, we will still have lessons!

When there is a snow day, I remake our lesson schedules as quickly as I can and post the new versions here on my website. The district also publishes a revised 6-day calendar located here.

  • April 2017 - Connecting music with science!

Did you know that string instruments are greatly affected by the weather? As spring arrives, we have been talking about how changes in temperature and humidity affect wood instruments. The most common effect is for instruments to go out of tune more often. Take extra care of your instrument at home, and make sure you remember to bring it in every week so Ms. Hecht can keep it tuned up!
