Reading: In order to ensure that each child makes as much progress as possible, research suggests that a consistent and sequential approach be implemented. To help your child meet his /her reading potential, homework assignments must be completed nightly. It is important that children read every day for at least 15 minutes. Children will also benefit from being read to so they hear smooth and fluent reading. It is OK to share an assignment and read every other page to your child. It is also OK to let your child read their favorite book again and again. Please ask your child about what is going on in the book they are reading. Why did the character do that? How did the character change? If you are reading a simple passage for younger children, please ask them what words rhyme or pick a word and ask them to come up with a word that rhymes.
Writing: Please have them write a complete sentence about what happened in the book or about the main character. For younger students, have them write the entire lower case alphabet in under one minute.
