    Course Description:

    English 9 is a program of literature and both written and oral expression, designed to broaden opportunities for reading pleasure and develop competency in writing and speaking.  Prose and poetry provide varied reading experiences including:  Romeo and Juliet, Fahrenheit 451, The Odyssey, Of Mice and Men, Mythology and many short stories, poems and dramas.  Preparation for the English Regents starts on this grade level with a broad understanding of the literary devices employed in the literature discussed.  In line with the school policy, considerable attention is paid to the development of writing skills through regularly assigned essays, compositions, journals and letters.  Emphasis is placed on grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and spelling.  Writing is done regularly and is based on literature, current events or student experiences.  Speeches are incorporated into the curriculum in a variety of ways, as well.  Students are expected to become thoroughly familiar with MLA research skills and will complete several research projects.

    Texts*: Students will read various short stories, non-fiction, poems, essays, and novels/plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Fahrenheit 451, Our Town, Of Mice and Men, Mythology, and Independent Reads (TBD).    *Texts and other reading selections are added/subtracted at the teacher’s discretion.

    Materials:

    You are required to bring the following items to class every day:

    • A 1” binder divided into 4 sections (notes, writing, tests/quizzes, vocabulary)
    • loose leaf paper
    • 2 pocket folder
    • Highlighters (several different colors/ Must be brought to class every day)
    • Blue or Black pens, pencils
    • Index cards (5x8) (ruled or unruled- your preference/ only needed for vocabulary)
    • A place to record homework assignments
    • Assigned reading

     

    Classroom Policies:

     Student Responsibilities:

    • Class Participation is essential for a successful year
    • Respect your teacher and your classmates
      • Please leave food, candy, and anything other than water for lunch time.
      • Please remove hats and put away headphones, phones, and/or any other electronic devices upon entering the room.
    • Be on time, prepared and ready to participate
    • Be your own advocate
    • Show academic integrity and honesty- always do your own work
      • There is a difference between working with a friend/classmate on an assignment and copying from a friend/classmate. Always do your own work. Do not share homework unless specifically directed.
      • Cite outside sources appropriately. Academic Honesty is of the utmost importance. Please refer to the Hendrick Hudson Code of Conduct and the Hendrick Hudson High School Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism.

    Grading: Grades will be computed based on tests, quizzes, essays, homework, projects, research, oral presentations, class work, and disposition/participation. Students will be assessed using the New York State CCSS Rubric (Common Core State Standards). HHHS grading adheres to a point based system.

     Here is an idea of what you can expect:

    • Homework/ Classwork: 5-50 points (depending on assignment and unit)
    • Tests/Essays: 50-100 points
    • Projects: 50-300 points (depending on assignment and unit)
    • Quizzes: 25-50 points (depending on assignment and unit)
    • Class Participation/Disposition: Students will receive a participation grade of up to 20 points. 

    Homework: Student will be assigned independent practice/reading/homework on a regular basis. Class discussion and progress in the curriculum will be much more rewarding and meaningful when all work is completed to the best of the student’s ability. Students are required to routinely check Google Classroom and the homework board (located in the classroom). A homework planner/organizer is highly recommended for this course.

    • Incomplete/missing Homework: Partial credit may be given at the teacher's discretion.
    • Printing Homework/Writing Assignments: You are required to utilize one of the computer labs and/or library as needed. Please plan accordingly.

    Attendance: Attendance to class is mandatory. Tardiness is unacceptable and disruptive to the class as a whole.

    • Tardiness- If you know you will be late to class, please notify me ahead of time. If it becomes an issues it will be addressed on an individual basis. Habitual lateness to class will result in the lowering of one’s grade, based on class participation alone. (3 tardies = 1 absence).
    • Cutting- Cutting class is a serious offense. Student absences will be dealt with according to the district attendance policy. Therefore, any student who has cut class will be penalized with a zero grade for the day’s work, reflected in the quarterly average.
    • Excused Absence: If you are absent, you are responsible for the work you missed. You should e-mail me and check Google Classroom.
      • If a long-term project/assignment is due when you are ill, you are still required to hand it in electronically. The understanding here is that you have completed your assigned work well in advance of the due date.
      • All tests and quizzes must be made up within three (3) days.

    Extensions: An extension may be granted in certain unusual circumstances; however, this privilege should not be abused or overused, and will, in any case, only be granted one week prior to the assignment’s due date. This does not apply to homework.

    Extra help: 2:15-2:45 (Room 208). 

    E-mail: E-mail is the preferred and quickest method of communication.

    Parental Notification: Parents will be notified via e-mail or phone call if you are not succeeding.

    Parent Portal: All parents have access to the Parent Portal. It is highly recommended that you check the portal on a regular basis for updated grades and/or missing assignments, progress reports, and report cards. Please note: since the portal is a live gradebook, averages will fluctuate on a consistent basis.

    Writing assignments:

    Unless otherwise directed, all writing assignments/essays/projects should adhere to the following:

    • Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, size 12 font, and stapled (if multiple pages) before you come to class.
    • Always make a copy and save it.
    • It is highly recommended that students use the technological tools provided by Hendrick Hudson High School. All students have access to Google Apps, Noodle Tools, Edmodo, and Turnitin.com. Thus, lost/unsaved work will no longer be an acceptable excuse. (This includes broken USB drives and printers.)

    • Correct spelling and punctuation are expected as a minimum requirement and are counted as part of one’s grade. Please use computer programs, a proofing partner, or ask the teacher for help well before the essay due date.
    • All essays will be kept in the classroom file folder after they are graded. It is the students' responsibility to put their papers in their folders. Papers will remain in the classroom until the end of the year. 

    • There will be a 5 point deduction for every day a paper/project is late. Any paper handed in later than 3 days will be regarded as a late paper, and will receive no higher than a 65%.
