Furnace Woods Students Create Thanksgiving Balloons for In-School Parade
Herald Square wasn’t the only place where Thanksgiving balloons were the stars of the show. Furnace Woods second graders in Laurie Baisley's and Nupur Pal-Kolisz's classes designed their own holiday balloons right before the Thanksgiving break, after they were inspired by the story of Tony Sarg, the creator of the original puppets featured in the very first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!
Students read Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet and learned what an impressive problem solver and inventor Sarg was from an early age. Students then used balloons, paper, markers, glue and, above all else, their imaginations to create balloons for a parade for the school’s kindergarteners, as a way to say, "Happy Thanksgiving!"
