Students Explore the Business of Sports at MetLife Stadium
Professional sports aren’t all fun and games, and for a group of HHHS students, a recent visit to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey provided a rare opportunity to draw back the curtains and observe the behind-the-scenes operations at a major sports organization.
The New York Jets host Sports Business Day each year, offering students from area high schools the chance to explore the business of professional sports. Last year, HHHS business teacher Linda Cabral Marrero brought her Business Law, Accounting, Career & Financial Management, and Marketing students to the event. “It was a great experience for them, so I decided to take this year’s students as well,” she said. “I think they genuinely enjoyed the unique experience.”
The students toured the stadium and met with a variety of Jets employees, including those involved in sales, data and analytics, and community outreach. Each described their position in detail and shared their own educational and career path. The students also had the opportunity to visit the stadium’s various clubs and were allowed to step onto the field twice during the visit.
Senior Ryan Olstrom said that it felt “unreal” to go on the field, while senior Logan Moore enjoyed walking through the players’ tunnel.
“I thought the Jets trip was a very cool experience,” said junior Natalie Smith. “It was interesting to hear people talk about their jobs in that industry.”
